Which mobile network holds the 4G title within the UK

As UK mobile users may be aware of, the mobile networks have been battling over control of the country's major regions since the days of pagers and handsets that were attached to your car. To this date, no individual network has reached complete domination. This is a good thing, as once they do, all other networks will disappear, leaving a non-competitive market.

Rootmetrics (monitoring the networks coverage levels), has revealed the four main UK networks all have a hold over a country in the UK, with EE claiming top performance in England, Vodafone occupying the top spot in Northern Ireland and Three winning in Scotland and Wales.

Who is king of where?

  • England = EE
  • Northern Ireland = Vodafone
  • Scotland and Wales = Three

EE is still leading in the market penetration, with its customers able to access 4G services across 90% of the entire UK territory. Vodafone's 4G is runner up with the network reaching 82% coverage across the UK. In third place is Three (Yes! That is right!) with 81%. Trailing behind was O2 with only 67% of the UK covered by its 4G network.

O2 has the weakest 4G service!?

However, O2 are winning in their text and calls service. Yes, they are not great for fast 4G, but they will ensure your calls come through. When it comes down to it, this is what a business user really counts on. Their customers being able to contact them when they need to!

"With new UK spectrum allocations soon to be auctioned in the run up to 5G, these performance results provide a snapshot on the competitive balance between the UK mobile operators now, and highlight which operators most need to acquire new spectrum capacity if they are to be a future mobile performance winner."
