Wi-Fi calling now coming to O2 UK: Starting with the iPhone on latest update

Following yesterday's iOS 10.3 release, O2 have announced that they are now able to offer a Wi-Fi calling service via the iPhone handsets.

This is when a network will use the setup on the device to link the incoming or outgoing call via the current Wi-Fi that the handset is connected to.

So far, it is just Apple that has this service and only with their latest iPhone 7. However, this is expected to soon change with manufacturers such as Samsung following suit.

How do you get it on the iPhone?

In addition to updating to iOS 10.3, the features require installing a carrier settings update to be enabled. Your device should prompt you to install the carrier settings update in Settings > General > Software Update.

To enable Wi-Fi calling, open the Settings app, tap on General > Wi-Fi Calling, and toggle on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.

To enable VoLTE, open the Settings app and tap on Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G > Voice & Data.

Limitations

There are some limitations to this service through! Although this service is great if you are located in an area of poor signal, where you can then make and receive calls. O2 have not yet setup the service to allow text messages to come through to you. This is a feature that both Vodafone and EE do support. So, if you are at home and relying on the Wifi call service, then no sms will come through to you, till you disconnect or move to another location.

The Wifi calling service is not network based. In fact, it is service that is already available. We just have to wait till the network supports it via their networks. With Vodafone and EE leading on this service, O2 still have a long way to catch up!

Verdict

This was found with an O2s previous solution via their Tu-Go service. Although this app meant that you were able to make and receive calls when signal is poor, the service prevented voicemails coming through! It seems that O2 like to ensure there is always a catch to anything they provide!

However, one bonus of the Tu Go service that none of the other networks are able to support with their Wi-Fi calling is that it ca be used abroad! Also, you are able to install the app to a tablet or laptop to make and receive calls via them!
