O2 stops alerts and notifications for mobile usage



Customers of the UK network O2 have previously received alert texts informing them when they have reached 80% and 100% usage on their minutes, texts and data. Also, O2 placed a high usage bar on numbers that reached their high usage alert. The network has announced that they no longer offer this service in full.

"This usage bar was a guide and never a guaranteed process"s.


The network advised that this service was never 100% accurate, as it took their systems up to 24 hours to acknowledge the users' amount. If they had reached near their limit and then used their device heavy, they still have the risk of greatly exceeding their allowance. Most likely, O2 was getting tired of users calling in with disputes on their bills and decided to pull the plug on the service.

O2 has made the decision to remove the usage alerts and bars for minutes and text usage as most customers are enjoying unlimited voice and text tariffs.


Their official stance on this move was that it was no longer needed due to their Small Biz plans with unlimited minutes and text, along with options for large volumes of data available. They have advised that they are still keeping the usage caps and limits on roaming though. This can be very handy, as this will be when your bills can have the largest runaway effect!

Data text alerts will remain, informing customers when they reach their 80% and 100% thresholds - however, there will be no usage bars applied any longer.


The network has also advised that they will keep the notification service for data. This is not a limit and it does mean that a user can go over their allowance still. However, here will be a notification system set in place - even though the network warns that there is no guarantee in it getting to you!? Best bet is to try a data monitoring app that can be downloaded to the handset and gives you real-time monitoring.
